Manila, Philippines, 1945: (Best played as Allies) MacArthur's crusade to liberate the Philippines after three long years of occupation by the Japanese has reached a bloody climax in Manila. General Yamashita - the famed "Tiger of Malaya" commanding all Imperial Japanese Army forces in the Philippines - has decided not to defend Manila and has ordered all units to pull out of the city to mountain strongholds in Northern Luzon. In defiance of this order the naval commander - Vice Admiral Okochi - has ordered naval personnel in Manila to defend the city to the death. This decision has been exacerbated when fast-moving American forces encircled and cut off any possible retreat from the city. This has turned the already desperate Japanese defenders into absolute fanatics. The Japanese forces in Manila are on a rampage of rape, murder and arson against the Philippine citizens and their city. Much of Manila has been burned or destroyed and what hasn't been destroyed has been turned into a fortress. The Japanese forces organized as the Manila Naval Defense Force [MNDF] - a hodgepodge collection of naval crews, marines, naval aviation personnel and labor conscripts - under the command of Rear Admiral Iwabuchi - have turned Manila into a rat's nest of strongpoints - minefields and obstacles. These defenses are covered by fire form everything from small arms - including over 600 machine guns of all types - to aircraft cannons stripped from planes and naval guns from warships. Fighting the Americans all the way, the Japanese have fallen back on the strongest defenses which are centered on the old walled city of Intramuros - a 16th century arrowhead bastioned fortress with walls 20 feet thick - and the main reinforced-concrete government buildings in downtown Manila and the port facilities. While the MNDF has no formal training in city fighting they are blood-mad fanatics who intend to die in their Emperor's service. This means that the American forces will have to root the defenders out house-by-house and room by room. The American forces - consisting of the 37th Infantry Division and elements of the 1st Cavalry Division - have been assigned the task of assaulting the remaining diehards around the Intramuros and the South Port area of the city along with members of the Phillippino resistance. General MacArthur has forbidden the use of air power in the city to minimize civilian casualties but the entire artillery assets of the XIV Corps will support the final attack. This artillery support is necessary to keep American casualties low but for the Philippine civilians trapped in the city it will mean death for many of them. It is not a question of whether the Americans will liberate Manila but a question of how expensive it will be in human lives. Before this battle is over the famed "Pearl of the Orient" will become a city of death drenched in the blood of over 6,000 American, 17,000 Japanese and 100,000 Phillippino casualties. NOTE: To make the game more manageable this scenario is based loosely on events that took place over several days from late February to early March 1945. Units are also augmented for playability. Also note that the Intramuros is completely sealed off. You will need to breach the walls with your engineers to take the assault into the city. It is not sufficient to just take the objective hexes. To win this fight you must eliminate all Japanese resistance in the city.
