Lorengau, Manus Island, Admiralties. 400km NNE of Medang, Papua New Guinea: [Best played as Allied] Having secured a base of operations on Los Negros Island in the Admiralties during the first weeks of March 1944, the mission of capturing Lorengau Airfield on the larger island of Manus fell to the US 1st Cavalry's 2nd Brigade commanded by General Mudge. Once ashore near Lugos Mission on 15 March, the 1st/8 and 2nd/8 Cavalry Squadrons pushed east along the two main roads leading to the objective. The cavalrymen were forced to hold up for the night by a series of Japanese bunker complexes manned by units of the 171 Infantry Battalion from the 1st Independent Mixed Brigade garrisoning the area. The American GIs waited through the long tropical night and prepared to continue their advance the next morning supported by the 2nd/7 Cavalry. Meanwhile, enemy reinforcements filtered through the dense jungle to take up ambush positions blocking the narrow desolate trails, insuring the cost of securing the airfield near Lorengau would be high.
