Fort Duncan was one of the few islands in the Philippines that was also emplaced with heavy gun batteries. The fort had (4) heavy batteries, Alice, Betty, Connie and Deb. Each comprised of (2) 155mm guns. And two batteries of 3in AA guns As in several forts in the Philippines, the gun batteries were Army and the garrison was Marine. Though not a large garrison, roughly six companies and assorted smaller units. The Marines were none the less professional regulars! The island its self was on the small side, being 2 miles at its widest and 2.5 miles at its longest. The problem facing the Japanese was the fact that the island was almost all rocky cliffs around the out-sides . The one exception being a small beach of about 100 yards located in the islands tiny inlet, with an even smaller pass from the beach up to the islands higher ground. The forts batteries could roll back into under-ground bunkers that made them all but impervious to naval shell fire and bombs. And even with a small garrison of Marines on t he island, with the natural terrain defenses of island would allow them to hold off an entire division from landing in the inlet! Thus the decision was made to employ a night paratroop drop right into the fort its self and along the open dirt road leading to the harbor bunker and the bunker over looking Calabash Point. A very dicey proposition in daylight, let alone on a partly cloudy night. But a night drop it would have to be as the Anti-Aircraft emplacements of the island had already proved them selves to be too potent for day light operations. Timing would be everything, that and too many troops over the cliffs would spell certain doom for the Japanese airborne! Fictional Scenario - best played as Axis!
