(Iwo Jima, Bonin islands, Northern Pacific) (H2H) (HISB)
IWO JIMA.. a desolate small volcanic island, halfway between Japan and the Marianas. The assault was a climax to the 16-month drive that carried the amphibious forces of the United States across the Central Pacific to Japan's doorstep. Striking first at Tarawa in November 1943, American forces had swept rapidly west and north, seizing primarily those islands essential for support of future operations. Many powerful enemy strongholds were bypassed and neutralized, left to wither on the vine. By late 1944 Iwo Jima had assumed such importance as a base for future air operations that its rapid seizure became imperative. Neutralization would not do; Iwo must be taken. The Japanese had proved in previous island actions that they were skilled and fanatical soldiers, prepared to fight to the death under their traditional beliefs. There can be no more fitting tribute than the well-known words of CINCPAC, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, "Among the Americans who served on Iwo Island uncommon valour was a common virtue."
(SPECIAL NOTES] [NVV] [EA Best with Extreme Assault "ON", but playable with it "OFF". Latter option will significantly favour US side] This scenario depicts the landing, and endeavours to portray the progress of the long battle in less than 50 turns. Both forces are less than actual, as my computer had some difficult handling the load. The ground is set as "soft" to simulate the difficult ash surface. The landing forces start to arrive at turn 6, so that the US player has some time to simulate the massive extended bombardment of the island by ships and aircraft. Suitable as team game.
