Butaritari island, Makin Atoll : (best Played as Allied) [Historical scenario]. The Makin Island raid was planned as a diversionary tactic to take pressure off the Marines fighting on Guadalcanal. The Raid was led by Lt. Col. Evans Carlsons and 220 men of the 2nd Raider Bn. The raid occured from 16 August through 18 August, 1942. In the early morning of the 17th, the Raiders landed from two submarines [the Nautilus and the Argonaut (photo's scenario) ] with rubber boats. Because of the bad weather, boats began to drift from the submarines...Little confusion occured at this time... Now, It's up to you to rewrite History... Objectives : Seize ("Destroy") all the objectives, then on turn 20, you must begin to reach "Exit Objectives" [with submarines (LCMs in this game) and rubber boats]. Rendez-vous on Black Beach... Design Notes : Map scale is adjusted for playability and clarity. USMC Leader's name are true to respect History. Events are based on historical events ! Epilogue : Based on native reports, Carlsons thought his force had accounted for more than 160 Japanese. The official's Raiders tally was 18 dead and 12 missing. In the confusion of returning the Raiders to the submarines 9 men were tragically left behind. These men were later captured and beheaded on October 16, 1942 on Kwajalein Island. The survivors came home as heroes and Lt. Col. Carlson received the Navy Cross. The raid itself had mixed results. Many believed it achieved its original goal of diverting forces from Guadalcanal, but the Japanese had guessed the size and purpose of the operation. On the negative side, that threat may have played a part in the subsequent Japanese decision to fortify heavily places like Tarawa Atoll. Any comments are welcome :
