A Legend is Born, Shaw, Pages 45-46 Utmost Savagery, Alexander, numerous Storm over the Gilberts, Hoyt, Page 75 The USMC in WW2, Smith, pages 515-517 Strong Men Armed, Leckie, Pages 194-195 Tarawa 1943 (Campaign series n°77), D. Scenario Size: Small Estimated Game Time: 15 Minutes 20 November 1943, Betio Islet, Long Pier, Tarawa Atoll, Hours: 8:55 AM Design Notes: This scenario is role-playing. You are the 2nd Lt. William Hawkins, leading part of your scout-sniper platoon (6 Men) to attack the main jetty of Betio. You will be assisted by your Engineering Officer 2nd Lt. Alan Leslie. This action recreates the fight undertaken by "Le Faucon" ("Hawk') to clear this pier in order to neutralize the enemy likely to fire on the landing craft during their movement towards the Red beaches 2 & 3. To be played solo on the side USMC. To learn more about Lieutenant Hawkins, please read the historical background about him below. 2nd Lt. William Deane Hawkins, commander of the Scout-sniper Platoon of the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment. Hawkins grew up in El Paso, Texas. During his childhood, following an unfortunate accident with hot water, a third of his body was horribly mutilated. Hawkins regained the use of his arm and leg and later found himself in high school excelling in athletics. Hawkins was a jovial young man who loved life. His nature and presence was already that of a Chef. When war broke out in December 1941, Hawkins, then a young and talented mining engineer, immediately tried to enlist. The Army and Navy turned him down because of his scars. The Marine Corps did not stop there. They accepted it without reservation. His service began at Guadalcanal in November 1942, where his skill and courage were recognized by a battlefield commission. He was therefore entrusted with the command of a platoon of elite scouts (Scout-Sniper Platoon). At Betio, during this key mission of the invasion of Tarawa, Hawkins was the first to land on the Pier. He headed straight for this long wooden dike while firing his gun and throwing grenades. He even took the flamethrower from one of his wounded men and ignited enemy resistance points. Thick beams exploded under the fire of enemy artillery trying to neutralize this heroic leader. He was hit in the calf but ignored the injury and headed still further forward. He could see the disaster on each of his sides where his comrades in arms were pinned down on all the beaches. Once the mission was accomplished, the group re-embarked on the LCVP and somehow reached the shore... Due to his exploits on Tarawa where he lost his life during the following battles, he obtained the Medal of Honor posthumously. ..and became a true legend within the Marine Corps- LB Sources: Heroes of WW2, Murphy, pages158-160 Tarawa: A Legend is Born, Shaw, Pages 45-46 Utmost Savagery, Alexander, numerous Storm over the Gilberts, Hoyt, Page 75 The USMC in WW2, Smith, pages 515-517 Strong Men Armed, Leckie, Pages 194-195 Tarawa 1943 (Campaign series n°77), D.
