Hellzapoppin Ridge, 8km NE of Cape Torokina, Bougainville: [Best played as Allied] If ever a series of offensives were conducted according to plan, it was the Allied island hopping campaign in the southwest Pacific known as Operation Cartwheel. From October 1943, through the end of the year it was the Japanese defending Bougainville who would face the whirlwind of American steel. The attack on Bougainville was fully expected by Imperial Headquarters and additional reinforcements were sent to aid the 6th Division's defense of the island. Notorious for the sack of Nanking in China, the division had been busy preparing for the invasion for months, insuring a costly battle for the American GIs and Marines. By mid-December, after six weeks of fighting, the 3rd Marine and 37th Infantry Divisions had carved out a beachhead around Cape Torokina at Empress Augusta Bay. However, from the high ground ringing the perimeter, enemy artillery positions continued to shell the airstrips and supply dumps, especially from one infamous group of hills to the northeast named Hellzapoppin Ridge. On December 18th, the Marines reacted by attacking with the 21st Marine Regiment to clear elements of the Japanese 23rd Infantry Regiment and the 4th South Seas Garrison Unit from the natural fortress.
