Tuluvu/Cape Gloucester, 440km WSW of Rabaul, New Britain: [Best played as Allied] One of the final stepping stones in the Allied plan to isolate the Japanese air and naval bases at Rabaul (Operation Cartwheel) was the seizure of airfields and other facilities at Cape Gloucester on New Britain. Refitted after their baptism on Guadalcanal, the honor of seizing the objective from elements of the Japanese 65th Brigade was given to the 1st Marine Division. Once ashore near Silimati Point on December 27th, the under-strength 1st Marine Regiment advanced westward along the coastal track against light opposition until scouts made contact with enemy outposts east of the main airfield. After waiting for supporting armor from the 1st Tank Battalion to move up through the soggy morass, the marines pushed through dense jungle and tight terrain the next day to discover firing pits and bunkers manned by the 2nd/141 Infantry Battalion with numerous anti-tank and 75mm weapons. With hardly any room for tanks and infantry to maneuver the "Raggedy Assed" 1st Marines plunged into the deadly crossfire to clear out the only real resistance between them and their objective.
