Okinawa was the last major battle between Allied Forces and Japan.
1 April 1945 seen as easy landing of over 180,000 Marine and
US Army troops. The first 3 weeks made the island look relatively
easy to take and the Army stepped up its time table. Then, moving
to take the other end of the island, the Allies ran into the
outer Shiru defense line. It would take almost 2 months to break
the Japanese and cost 50,000 Allied dead and casualties. Japan
left 107,000 dead. The extreme loss of life, prompted cries for
a congressional investigation. In the end, it was understood
Japan's fanatical death before surrender mentality, would cost
the Marines, Army and Navy blood, for every foot of ground they
took. This battle respresents the first engagement along the
outer Shiru Defense Line. This map well represents the nearly
5 mile wide Shuri Outer Line, with the Hill on the left, strong
center and choke point on the right. It took the 3 point Marine/Army
attack, nearly 5 days to crack it. 40 Turns is the first 2 days
of battle.
