Buna, 160km NE of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea: [Best played as Allied] For nearly a month in late 1942, elements of the US 32nd Infantry Division had battered with little success at the Japanese forces entrenched in and around the Duropa Plantation on Papua New Guinea. Angered by the lack of progress and poor "fighting spirit" of the units involved, the division commander General Harding, replaced many American officers. By the middle of December the responsibility for rooting the enemy out of the Plantation and New Airstrip area had been handed over to the Australian 18th Brigade, reinforced with tanks, while the bulk of the American force continued to shift left to secure the Old Airstrip and Buna objectives. With the capture of Buna Village, which effectively cut off the Japanese defenders from their overland supply sources, the American Urbana Front was ordered to renew the attack. The GIs instructions were to seize Musita Island and The Triangle from remnants of the Sasebo 5th and Yokosuka 5th SNLF units defending the approaches to Buna Mission from where the enemy defense was being directed. However, Colonel Tomlinson commanding the attack made it very clear to his battalion commanders that their true objective was to "Take Buna Mission" and redeem the reputation of the 32nd Infantry!
