Hypothetical: Operation Coronet - the invasion of the main Japanese home island (Honshu) - is underway. The American X Corps consisting of the First Marine Division and the Army’s 7th and 3rd divisions are executing a deep pincer movement around the left flank of the Yokahama/Tokyo area to isolate the capitol. Driving up into the highlands the Marines encounter some late snow around the Chosan Reservoir (fictional) turning the rugged landscape into a cold, muddy hell. The Marines' east flank is being screened by an understrength Army regimental combat team from the 7th division. Unbeknownst to the Americans the Japanese have anticipated this move and have set a trap. The 20th Army consisting of three elite divisions has been given the task of overwhelming and destroying this force. In a surprise attack the previous night the Japanese hordes came screaming down out of the snowy hills and after a series of savage moonlight firefights have surrounded the Marines and soldiers in several places along their strung out supply lines. On the east side of the reservoir the embattled 31st RCT has been cut off from the Marines who still hold the town of Hagaru open to the south. Short of manpower - the 7th Division rear echelon personnel have been formed into provisional rifle platoons to help hold open the road for the main body of the 31st RCT. Supply drops by cargo planes are due to replenish the RCTs depleted ammo stocks and other supplies (represented by parachute reinforcements). A general retreat has been ordered so once these supplies arrive the Army units must either fight their way back to the Marines or the Marines must open up the way for the Army to fall back. Either way the American commander must get as many of his forces back to Hagaru and retreat to the South (exit hex at the bottom of the map) before time runs out. Exhausted remnants from other Marine units who have been fighting on the west side of the reservoir will be falling back along the road in the bottom left corner so the escape route at Hagaru must remain secure. Air support will be provided by Marine Corsairs armed with rockets and napalm (represented by naval artillery). The fanatical Japanese will throw everything they have at this force to cut it off and kill it before they can escape so expect strong attacks all along the battle area. *(Loosely based on the events East of the Chosin Reservoir in Korea - late November and early December 1950)*
