Koiari...Bougainville..on November 29th the 3rd Marine Divisioninvaded the beaches off Kaori with a predawn amphibious landing.TheMarine forces came ashore on the edge of large Japanese supplydump. Elements of the Japanese 23rd Infantry Division reactedquickly and pinned the Marines on the Beach with heavy fire. Landingcraft attempted to extract the force were twice driven off. Itwas not until late in the afternoon that air support and navalguns silienced the strong Japanse defense and the Marines wereable to get back out to sea.
