Palo, 10km S of Tacloban, Leyte, Philippines: [Best played as Allied] During the summer of 1944, the Japanese had accepted the fact that American forces would be returning to the Philippines. Where and when were the major questions occupying Imperial Headquarters and the 14th Area Army defending the islands. In the early morning hours of October 20th, convoys loaded with General MacArthur's assault forces steamed into Leyte Gulf and assembled off the eastern shore of Leyte, opposite the landing beaches stretching between Tacloban to Dulag. The wait was over! Landing to the left of the 1st Calvary Division in the US X Corps zone south of Tacloban, was the 24th Infantry Division. On the first day the 19th Regimental Combat Team was to establish an initial beachhead on the far left of Red Beach, then advance inland and seize Mount Guinhandang overlooking Palo. Waiting for the GIs was the Japanese 33rd Infantry Regiment and a maze of interlaced trenches and bunkers. With their transports driven off by long range guns, taking the artillery and most of the armor support with them, day one on Leyte would be no cakewalk for the returning Americans.

Interesting scenario with a overwhelming US beach assault on a fixed and spread out IJA defense......a last ditch cave defense for the Japanese may save the day for the Axis while the Allies must be careful in the initial phases of the beach landing.......

Not very challenging for the Japanese. Not good for PBEM. The caves make for a decent human vs. AI game.

A very tough scenario for both sides. The Japanese need to withdraw from the beaches to the escarpment and bleed the Americans as they attempt to take the Victory hexes. There are several caves which are un-affected by indirect fire. The Americans will find this scenario to be very exhausting and aggravating. I close assaulted several disrupted Japanese units at least 3 to 8 times per turn with little or no results. I'm thinking that things have changed with the 2.0 upgrade.
