Attu Island, western tip of the Aleutian Islands, USA: NIGHT [Best played as Axis] In June of 1942, as the Japanese moved east toward Midway Island, a small invasion force struck at American territory in the Aleutians and occupied two islands. Under extreme environmental conditions, the two sides battled in this desolate wasteland. Each side determined to deny the chance of exploiting the islands in the chain that were seen as stepping stones toward the other's homeland. By the next year, the US took steps to decide the issue once and for all, and on the 11th of May the first troops were put ashore on Attu. For two and a half weeks the fighting raged, but finally the Japanese invaders were backed into a corner with their back to the sea. By 28 may the Americans were poised for the final assault on Chichagof Harbor, but during the night Colonel Yamasaki decided to turn the tables. Using surprise to his advantage, he pounced upon his foe with all of his remaining able-bodied men. His plan was a desperate one: simply break out of the harbor area, fight through the Clevesy Pass to the US artillery position on a nearby hill, and once there, capture the howitzers and turn them on the enemy. A bloody battle ensued in the early dawn light with screaming "Banzai" charges and no quarter being given!
