Operation Grenade called for an infantry assault across the Roer River beginning on 23 February, exploited by an armored drive through the Roer Valley to the Rhine at Dusseldorf and Cologne. Most German mobile reserves had been sent north to deal with Veritable; however, the weak 9th and 11th Panzer Divisions remained under the direct control of 15th Army to face the American offensive. Thus far the Panther and Tiger tanks had reigned supreme on the western front when facing Allied tanks with anywhere near equal forces. Only superior numbers had allowed American and British tankers to defeat the panzers time and again. This was about to change with the introduction of improved Shermans and the new T-26 Pershing heavy tank. On 27 February, CCB/3rd Armored introduced the panzertruppen of the 9th Panzer to this new threat!
