[Schevenhuette, East of Aachen]:[H2H or as Axis]:[HIS]:[BB]: Schevenhuette was situated on the right flank of the axis of advance of CCB of the 3rd Armored Division and the 47th Infantry Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division. CCB/3 is better known after its commander: William Lovelady. From the 12th of September until the 16th his Taskforce managed to break into the Westwall and in succession to take Roetgen, Dreilaegertalsperre, Rott, Zweifall, Vicht and Mausbach against resistance of various German Kamfgruppen consisting of remains of the 116th and the 9th Panzer Division and other hodgepodge units. Gressenich though was succesfully held by the remains of the German 9th Panzer against several American attacks. Despite that feat, the German situation deteriorated when Schevenhuette, situated in the narrow valley of the Wehebach was occupied without a fight by the US 47th Regiment. Schevenhuette was the easternmost village the Americans had reached before the Germans responded in force. On the 16th of september, the seasoned 48th Grenadier Regiment of the 12th Infantry Division had disembarked from the Düren train station and was on route to Hamich and Gressenich to stop the American drive. In a series of counterattacks on the 17th of September near Mausbach and Krewinkel, the front did start to stabilize, despite the fact that the Germans were not able to meet their objectives and suffered substantial losses. Even as German Corps command was well aware that the lack of succes of the counterattacks was mainly due to the overwhelming superiority of US numbers in men and equipment, yet another attack was ordered. On 21 September II/GR48 was told to prepare for an assault on Schevenhuette the next day after artillery preparation. So 6th and 7th company left their positions in the Daens Forest, crossed the road to Langerwehe and moved eastward into the Laufenburg forest, marching half a circle, thus reaching their jump-off positions on the steep wooded slopes east of Schevenhuette. The attack went in at 7 AM and by 10 AM it had failed completely. The sturdy stone built houses were well defended by some 600 men of the 3rd battalion of the 47th US Infantry Regiment who had already fortified the village and were supported by tanks and tankdestroyers of Tank Battalion 746 and TankDestroyer Battalion 899. Losses were heavy. The Germans left behind 135 dead, 34 wounded and 45 men were taken prisoner. The Americans lost 13 men killed and 34 wounded. [Note that parts of I/GR 48 are also on the map. They did not take part in the attack and are therefore fixed]:[when played as Axis against Allied AI alternative victory settings could be: 250, 500, 750, 1000]
The Axis had a major victory after capturing just one of the 4 VP's. By the time they captured another, the game was out of reach for the Ami's. Ended up calling the game a draw.
