(H2H) (HISB) 300 km north of Addis Ababa, the last major battle of the war took place at Mai Ts'chew*. The Italian advance had been strongly opposed, helped greatly by Abyssinian deficiencies. Woeful communications, inferior weaponry, doubtful loyalty amongst the nobility- who provided the principal support to the monarchy-and poor leadership made up much of the sorry tale. But the customary basis of Abyssinian warfare ... pitched battles, fought in daylight,... also had a negative effect. Guerilla warfare, which would have been an ideal strategy, was never considered until it was adopted after the war itself was over. Italian poison gas, primarily mustard, played a role, and the Regia Aeronautica operated without opposition. Badoglio, a shrewd, systematic, commander, and his ruthless subordinate Graziani knew the Abyssinian desire for pitched battle would override other strategic and operational considerations......the memory of the great triumph of Adowa 40 years before stirred in the warrior's breast! At Mai Ts'chew he established in a strong defensive position and awaited what he knew would be Haile Selassie's last throw of the dice.........* Spelling varies...Mai Ceu, Mai Chew, Maychew. {SPECIAL NOTES}:[NVV] The Abyssinians need to get up close and personal...shooting at greater than 1 hex will not do much damage. Assault is their key. The game was tested with Extreme Assault ON, so regular assault will give the Abyssinians a significant advantage..Thanks to Erik Walraven for encouragement and good advice.
