Steinkjer, 124 km N of Trondheim, Norway [H2H- Battles in the North Tournament]. The abandonment of the direct naval assault on Trondheim left German destroyers in full control of the fjords. Allies intended to launch an attack through the land, using smaller ports: Namsos to the north and Andalsnes to the south. By the late evening of 17th April the 146th Brigade was on shore. The general policy was to move forward as soon as possible. British supported by Norwegian Dragoons reached Steinkjer on April 19th and established outposts some seventeen miles to the south. At the same time despite heavy airaids on Namsos, three battalions of French Chasseurs Alpines were coming ashore. With such dangerous enemy's forces build-up, Oberst Weiss commanding the Trondheim garrison decided to not allow Allies to join their forces. He attack instead. His mountain troops moved along the main road from Trondheim facing Dragoons and King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. After bitter fighting at Veldarsora large portions of detachments were thrown behind the Leksdalsvatn. The road towards Namsos stood opened for German advance. Meanwhile another taskforce supported by destroyer landed in Kirkensvaag in order to cut off the routs of withdrawal. Brig Philips commanding British Brigade had to make a stand south of Steinkjer in order to stop Germans and allow cut off forces to join Brigade after enduring march around the lake and through Striklestad.
