Canisy, 8km SW of St. Lo, France: [Best played as Allied] On July 25th the infantry divisions of the US VII Corps began their advance west of St. Lo, hopeful that the Cobra bombardment early that morning had created a gap in the German defensive line. The ground attack moved across the Periers-St. Lo highway but ground to a halt, failing to take the key towns of Marigny and St. Gilles from where the exploitation phase was to begin. On the morning of 26 July VII Corps committed its two armored divisions to the attack. On the right the spearhead of Combat Command A/2nd Armored, pushed off towards St. Gilles and immediately encountered resistance by elements of the 275th Infantry Division and survivors of Panzer Lehr. Throughout the day the 1st/66 and 2nd/66 Tank Battalions supported by elements of the attached 22nd Infantry Regiment, advanced steadily against clusters of armor and dug-in infantry. The going was tough through "Ambush Alley," but by the end of the day a hole had been blasted in the German lines.
