Brumunddal, 95km N of Oslo, Norway: [Best played as Axis] When the German army invaded Norway on April 8, 1940, they caught the Allies off guard. But Britain reacted swiftly by rushing several small forces across the North Sea to aid in the defence of Norway. One such force was the 148th Brigade. It came ashore at Andalsnes on the western coast of Norway, and moved inland by rail to Lillehammer. General Ruge, Commander-in-chief of the Norwegian Army, was delighted to have the British troops, but was disappointed to find that these men of the Leicesters and the Foresters Battalion were "Territorials". Furthermore, they lacked heavy weapons and vehicles. Still, he dispersed the British soldiers throughout his own troops, the Torkilden Battalion and the 2nd Norwegian Dragoons, in order to improve their morale. Then he set out his defences to delay the German advance in the rough terrain and woods that surrounded Lake Mojsa. The German invaders struck quickly, moved inland and captured Gjovik on 20 April. Here they regrouped before pushing northward to Trondheim. This time, supported by mortars, tanks and aircraft they would face the British soldier for the first time in the war. This battle would mark the start of a long and bitter retreat for the Allies in their stand for Norway.
