Keren, Abyssinia, in East Africa : [ Allied human vs Axis computer] The first major battle between the Italians and the British in Italian East Africa was at the mountains surrounding the city of Keren. From this formidable position, the Italians made their only serious stand against the British Sudan Desert Strikeforce early in 1941. Following their 1940 expulsion from East Africa, and their only campaign lost to the Italians, the British eventually reorganized their troops and made a masterful plan to remove the Italians from Abyssinia. This would not only reestablish their colonial hold on these African territories so crucial to the security of Egypt and the Suez region, but it would also reinstall Hailie Selasie, Emperor of Ethiopia, to power after his exile in Mussolini's 1936 invasion of Abyssinia. Their morale already crushed by numerous retreats during the British advance, which started in Sudan, the Italian East Africa Command forces under General Frusci stop at Keren to face the British. Feb. 7 : Following the defeat of Gen. Frusci's rear-guard units at Agordat, the Italians have retreated into the formidable mountain defenses around the city of Keren in Eritrea. Being a vital road link to the port of Massawa on the Red Sea, the British Sudan Forces under Gen. Platt are assigned to press on with the campaign until the Italians surrender. The 11th Indian Brigade, after a rough two day battle, has finally regrouped at the foot of Cameron Ridge. This range of hills, which acts as the gateway to Keren Road, must be taken at all costs.
