Brolo, 65km W of Messina, Sicily: [Best played as Allied] Only along Sicily's northern coast was the Axis withdrawal from the island seriously threatened by the US 7th Army. By August 9th, the German 29th Panzer Grenadier Division had dug in along the slopes of Naso Ridge, west of Brolo, effectively blocking General Truscott's 3rd Infantry Division from driving along the coast to the port of Messina. Wanting desperately to get to Messina ahead of Montgomery's 8th Army, General Patton called for another amphibious operation to outflank the German position. Once again the GIs of Lt. Colonel Bernard's 2nd/30 Infantry Battalion, "Truscott's Marines," were tapped to make the end run. Reinforced with tanks and self-propelled artillery, Bernard's small task force was landed on Brolo Beach to push its way inland and seize the heights of Monte Cipolla and hold roadblocks on the coastal highway until relieved. Of course the plan called for Lt. Colonel Krueger's 71st PzG Regiment to sit quietly while their escape route was cut. Unfortunately for the Americans, the Germans were notorious for not cooperating in their own destruction! Design Note: Map scale has been adjusted for clarity and playability.
