Tilly-la-Campagne, Normandy (10 Km S. Caen). H2H opponent. At the end of July the situation in the Caen front was became desperated for British. The previous operations against the high grounds in the south of Caen failed. The German defensive positions in the Orne-Verrieres-Bourguebus line was holding by SS elite units and they was leading to an attrition battle for Monty´s forces. Crerar´s First Canadian Army was activated and ordered to keep up the pressure south Caen in order to stop the German redirecting their forces against the American breakout.Tilly was the main observation point into the Orne bridgehead. The Nova Scotia Highlanders Rgt supported by tanks from the Fort Garry Horse Rgt started the attack. In the village and surroundings the SS units was being relieved by the experienced 89th Infantry Division (Horseshoe Div.). Some elements of the 1SS Pz Div LAH already in rear come back to Tilly. Among them there were elements of Peiper´s 1SS Pz Rgt. and Sandig´s 2SS Panzergrenadier Rgt. An hard battle for Canadians was to come.

Brutal slog uphill for the Canucks, with Tilly sitting at the top. Nice balance of forces, plenty of tanks on both sides. The longer the krauts can keep em' pinned, the better their chances. The allies have several avenues of approach to choose from, none of which is really 'safe'. I chose to smash up thru the middle.
