14 April, 1941
Nothing stands between Rommel and Cairo except for the Australian 9th Division holding the vital Italian harbor/fortress Tobruk. During the night of 13 April the grenadiers of Machine Gun Battalion 8 under Oberstleutnant Ponath infiltrated across the anti-tank ditch and barbed wire fence and established a bridgehead inside the Tobruk perimeter. By 0500 hours 5th Panzer Regiment under Oberst Olbrich passed through a gap cleared by Ponath's engineers, dropped off their riding infantry, and advanced until they reached a wadi a half mile inside the wire. At dawn the panzers started their engines, rolled out of the dip, and headed straight for the key road junction known as King's Cross. The Australian first defensive line was not defeated, and they now quitely wait for the German infantry attempting to follow.
