Hanau, 20km E of Frankfurt am Main, Germany: [Best played as Allied] The first exploitation of Third Army's crossing of the Rhine River west of Frankfurt came from the Oppenheim bridgehead. As soon as Combat Command A/4th Armored Division had crossed the Rhine it was sent in a sweeping drive around Darmstadt toward the Main River. Having had a bridge across the Moselle River blown practically in their faces, the men of CCA seemed obsessed with only one thought: Get a Bridge! Near Hanau, east of Frankfurt, the Americans found a railway bridge on March 25th to which an appendage had been attached for vehicular traffic. It was just what they were looking for. Once again as the leading tanks fought towards their objective, engineers from the defending 987th/267 Volksgrenadier Regiment attempted to blow the bridge. But this time only the railway portion was damaged leaving the rest fully functional. The Americans rushed across under fierce anti-tank and small arms fire; the GIs had their bridge. Next they had to hold it against counterattacks by KG Zeitzler from the 11th Panzer Division!

Axis armor controls the game. Approaches to the bridge are death traps. Axis MG's from the far side of the river cover LOS with enfilading fire.
Resolve then, that on this very ground, with small flags waving and tinny blasts on tiny trumpets, we shall meet the enemy, and not only may he be ours, he may be us. --Walt Kelly
