Omaha Beach, 15km NW of Bayeux, France: [Best played as Allied] Perhaps without the combat experienced 1st Infantry Division leading the D-Day landings by the US V Corp, Omaha Beach could not have been taken. As the 16th Infantry Regiment stormed ashore on the eastern side of Omaha they found extensively prepared obstacles and defensive positions that the pre-landing bombardments had hardly scratched. Worse, they found a fully alerted German coastal defense force. The objective for the "Fighting 16th" was to seize the beach exits as quickly as possible and drive to the high ground along Route N814. But the Germans also recognized the importance of the exits and had fortified them heavily. The soldiers of "The Big Red One" found themselves stalled under German guns of all sizes, sighted to sweep the beach with murderous crossfire. While General Bradley struggled with the decision of withdrawing from Omaha, several breaches were finally made in the defenses and the Americans began to move inland.

Lots of fun for the Axis especially if you can wipe out a lot of attackers at the beginning. Allies have many more troops and more equipment so they can make good progress once the start advancing up the cliffs.

This scenario was originally set up to play vs. the AI. As the new rules allow many of the smaller caliber German AT emplacements to remain hidden while firing, I believe it is now a good H2H match and we enjoyed it completely. There are a couple of small details that could be fixed. First, the Allied player receives two sets of 105mm Howitzers late that he can't move or use because there are no transports. Also, IMO it would be nice to have a cruiser for naval artillery, even if you had to give up one or two of the destroyers. It is difficult to get results on the bunkers with the destroyer 5 inch salvos. Smoke is key in this one, and if you can deny the German's LOS to areas of the beach...you can pick up the pieces and move inland.

Germans are fixed in their fortifications until late in the game. Allies have to fined the weak spots in the fortification line & exploit them to move inland.
