Near Unna, Ruhr Pocket [Historical]:[H2H] Trapped in the Ruhr Pocket, the 116 Panzer Division was reduced to little more than two battalions. North of the Ruhr, only Hauptmann Zanzinger's second battalion, 156. Panzergrenadier Rgt. remained. Retreating westward, they took a new position at Dellwig. Some scant reinforcements came in: The Unna SS-NCO School, 40 men. But four Jagdtigers showed up from the 512. Schwere Panzerjager Abteilung, under panzer ace Hauptmann Albert Ernst. Zanzinger gathered these with the few panzers they had left. To the north, the city of Unna was under heavy attack by the 3rd Armored Division CCA. Reichstrasse 233 was heavily bombed south of Unna. Realizing this, Zanzinger sent his motley force up a hill north of Strickerdicke, by the Bismarck Tower. From there, they had a wide-open view to the north. In the early morning, 8th Armored Division's CCA attacked Unna via Kesseburen. During its attack, enveloping south of Unna, Task Force Goodrich was hit with heavy fire from the hill and requested artillery on that area. For their part, the artillery fliers requested air strikes. This was answered by the 510th Squadron of 405th Fighter Group, whose P-47D Thunderbolts struck the Panzers and Jagdtigers with a vengeance. Although the assortment of German heavy armor destroyed many Sherman tanks, they also took significant losses...
Maybe another strategy could have worked, but scn to short to find out.
