This scenario assumes that the French never constructed the Maginot Line and instead concentrated on building up their conventional forces. Meanwhile, Germany expanded the size of its military forces to a much greater extent. War breaks out as it did, but this time a much stronger Germany immediately launches an offensive in the west. This depicts a hypothetical meeting engagement between a reinforced French mountain division and a German infantry and mountain division in hilly terrain overlooking a river valley near the Franco-German border in the autumn of 1939. A large scale infantry battle reminiscent of the early stages of World War I before trench warfare set in. Will the French stand firm in the face of the German advance as General Ferdinand Foch and his XX Corps did behind the River Meurthe on the high ground of the Grand Couronne de Nancy on the Lorraine Front in August 1914?
