El Uach, Italian Somaliland: After the Italians declared war on the Allied powers, with the exception of on the French border, her military was not ready to move. Preparations were still to be made before Mussolini's "New Roman Legions" would be ready for conquests. In north and east Africa the Commonwealth found itself stretched very thin with a dirth of troops but a large contempt for the fighting prowess of Il Duce's armies. As was being done in North Africa, the British began a series of very aggressive raiding on isolated Italian outposts. In the dark early dawn of 17 July, 1940, Commonwealth forces crossed from Kenya into Italian Somaliland headed for El Uach.
