St. Julien, 5km NE of Metz, France: [Best played as Allied] By November 1944, the Allies in eastern France were fighting deteriorating weather conditions as well as the Germans. As at Nancy to the south, American plans called for a two-pronged assault from above and below Metz and the eventual encirclement of the city. By mid November, struggling with endless days of continuous rain that forced the Moselle over its banks, causing much delay and flooding supply roads, XX Corps had managed to seize several bridgeheads across the swollen river. Following assaults by the 95th Infantry Division against the German lines near Uckange, Task Force Bacon was ordered to attack south along the Metz-Thionville highway through the remnants of the 1216th/462 Grenadier Regiment. By the 17th, Colonel Bacon's task force had cut a path through German resistance to Tremery. For the cold and soggy GIs, the day ahead was another of heavy rain and clearing enemy strongpoints from the east bank of the Moselle. Finally only the forts and their defenders at St. Julien and Mey were left to bar Colonel Bacon's troops from driving into the heart of the city.
