South of Hargesia, British Somaliland: After crossing into British Somaliland, from Abyssinia, on August 3rd, Italian General Nasi's "Center" Column had taken three days to travel the 50 miles to Hargesia, on the main road to Berbera, the ultimate goal. British General Godwin-Austen's small force could not defend the border everywhere so they decided to meet the Italians on the main road at Tug Argan, north of Hargesia. To buy time to prepare their defenses, the British deployed a small blocking force just south of Hargesia. It was a pickup force which included elements of the Northern Rhodesian Regiment, Nyasaland native infantry and some companies of the small, but vaunted, Somaliland Camel Corps. On August 6th, lead elements of the Italian force, including part of General Tosti's XIV Colonial Brigade and attached mobile units approached Hargesia, from the south. The British delaying force "managed to knock out a number of Italian vehicles before withdrawing back to Tug Argan".
