In the pre-dawn hours of May 10, 1940, an elite group of German Airborne Forces was tasked with a major mission code named "Operation Gelb". The mission was to take the well defended fortress of Eben Emael which dominated the terrain for miles, their second objective was to capture the bridges that spanned the Albert Canal. Their success would allow the Sixth Army to pass without delay and continue with the conquest of France and the Low Countries.
