Operation " Monte Amiata" - The Matrix Games version of West Front

After the rapid capture and liberation of Rome the Allied continued their push forward to northern Italy. The German XIV Army gradually withdrew to a new defensive-position called "Edith Line", and meanwhile small Units fought to slow down the Allied advance. After loss important strategical Objectives like the towns of Grosseto, Viterbo, Bolsena, Perugia and Orvieto, a new German resistence was organized between Paganico and Radicofani-Chiusi (southern Siena) holding the central Key of the Mount Amiata. The German High Command advocated immediatly a plan in order to get control the Amiata´s Mercury Mine and to block the Cassia road, an important and strategical supply road. Elements of the 1st US Division from Grosseto, the 4th Marokker Rgt. from the Southern flank, together with Units of the 6th South Africa Division from Radicofani, rushed through wooded and hardly terrain to Piancastagnaio and Abbadia St. Salvatore to set a trap for the 11st FJ Regiment and the 71st PzGr Regiment, seized over there. ( Best played: Allied against Computer FOW) Scale map 1 Hex = 250 meter Dopo la presa di Roma gli Alleati riprendono la loro marcia verso il nord Italia ,mentre le truppe tedesche delle XIV Armata a cui era nato quel territorio si ritirano lentamenteverso una nuova linea di arresto detta "Edith" lasciando solo piccole unità di retroguardia per allentare l'avanzata degli angloamericani.Dopo aver conquistati importanti obbiettivi startegici come Grosseto ,Viterbo,Bolsena ,Perugia ed Orvieto,i tedeschi oppongono resistenza lungo una direttrice che va dal paese di Paganico nella zona di Grosseto fino a Radicofani e Chiusi nella zona della provincia sud di Siena facendo perno sul massiccio del monte Amiata da dove controllare il passaggio sulla strada statale Cassia la più importante via di comunicazione verso il nord ed in particolare verso Siena e poi Firenze.Reparti della 1st Div. USA provenienti da ovest (Grosseto) con l'aiuto di reparti del 4° Rgt.Tiratori Marocchini provenienti da sud (Bolsena),cercano di congiungersi con reparti della 6 st. Sout Afrika Division provenienti da nord-est (Radicofani) per chiudere in trappola alcuni battaglioni appartenenti al 11° FJR della 4 FJD ,al 71° PzGr Rgt. ed a piccole unità di supporto.I principali obbiettivi da raggiungere sono i due paesi di Piancastagnaio ed Abbadia San Salvatore e l'importante miniera di mercurio in essa situata.Il particolare terreno con fitti boschi e ripidi cambi di pendio rendono il compito particolarmente difficile.
