After the rapid capture and liberation of Rome the Allied continued
their push forward to northern Italy. The German XIV Army gradually
withdrew to a new defensive-position called "Edith Line", and
meanwhile small Units fought to slow down the Allied advance.
After loss important strategical Objectives like the towns of
Grosseto, Viterbo, Bolsena, Perugia and Orvieto, a new German
resistence was organized between Paganico and Radicofani-Chiusi
(southern Siena) holding the central Key of the Mount Amiata.
The German High Command advocated immediatly a plan in order
to get control the Amiata´s Mercury Mine and to block the Cassia
road, an important and strategical supply road. Elements of the
1st US Division from Grosseto, the 4th Marokker Rgt. from the
Southern flank, together with Units of the 6th South Africa Division
from Radicofani, rushed through wooded and hardly terrain to
Piancastagnaio and Abbadia St. Salvatore to set a trap for the
11st FJ Regiment and the 71st PzGr Regiment, seized over there.
