26 June , 1944 After the rapid capture and liberation of Rome the Allied continued their push forward to northern Italy. The German XIV Army gradually withdrew to a new defensive-position called "Edith Line", and meanwhile small Units fought to slow down the Allied advance. After loss important strategical Objectives like the towns of Grosseto, Viterbo, Bolsena, Perugia and Orvieto, a new German resistence was organized between Paganico and Radicofani-Chiusi (southern Siena) holding the central Key of the Mount Amiata. The German High Command advocated immediatly a plan in order to get control the Amiata´s Mercury Mine and to block the Cassia road, an important and strategical supply road. Elements of the 1st US Division from Grosseto, the 4th Marokker Rgt. from the Southern flank, together with Units of the 6th South Africa Division from Radicofani, rushed through wooded and hardly terrain to Piancastagnaio and Abbadia St. Salvatore to set a trap for the 11st FJ Regiment and the 71st PzGr Regiment, seized over there.
