They attacked first from the northeast, but were thrown back by Task Force Kane, then the other Volksgrenadier battalion attacked from the west, and was again repulsed. Now it was the 2. SS Panzer Division's turn. Two Panther companies and a panzergrenadier company moved out of the Odeigne assembly area with orders to take Freyneux and advance on Grandmenil. The spearhead platoon, led by Panzer-Ace Fritz Langanke, was hit by heavy tank fire at Freyneux and a fierce tank battle followed. Afterward, 8 Panthers and 8 Shermans were either destroyed or disabled.
