The German Army decided, for the winter of 1944, to reinforce their Siegfried line. On December 2nd the 406th Regiment of the 102th US Infantry Division captured the city of Linnich and the 407th took Flossdorf on the Roer river. General Keating, was planning a major offensive for January 26th 1945 to capture the last German stronghold on the Roer. He expected a strong fight from the German Army to defend the Korrenzig Bridge but the Germans blew it soon. The German Oberkommando admitted that the Siegfried Line could be penetrated and based their defenses on the theory that mobile troops and artillery behind the line could annihilate successful penetrations by equally successful counterattacks. The 102nd Division, the OZARKS Division, would then concentrate its' power between Linnich and Roerdorf to lunch his offensive on the Roer. On 23rd February the 327th Engineers Regiment started erecting pontoon bridges and the 407th Regiment crossed the river in direction Gevenich-Glimbach under mortars fire of the 340 Volksgrenadier Division. The 406th Regiment, one day after, from Roerdorf to Tetz-Boslar. The Attack to the Germany heart was began.

Allies need to be quick off the mark and push hard to get an early crossing they can hold, using engineers throw up some light some bridges under the cover of the woods to move your supporting troops across while being protected from the axis artillery and unzip the axis line.
