As the Battle of the Bulge entered its second week of action, the American defenders at Bastogne found themselves cut off from the balance of the US First Army. There had been no outside ground supply since December 20th, and the 101st Airborne and its numerous attached elements were feeling the pinch. The skies would clear later in the day on December 23, paving the way for a massive air drop of supplies in the afternoon. But before the cargo planes would arrive, the 101st would have to hold off yet one more assault against by elements of the 26th VH Division and the Panzer Lehr.
