North of Wesel, Germany. As part of Operation Varsity, the crossing of the Rhine at Wesel, the British 3rd Airborne Brigade was dropped in the area of Bergerfurth. The Brigade consisted of the of the British 8th and 9th Battalions, as well as the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion. The Canadians were to capture the town of Bergerfurth and seize the Schnepfenberg Heights. The British were to secure the drop zone, north of Bergerfurth, and start the advance on Hamminkeln. Confronting the paratroopers were hard, seasoned veterans of the same calibre. The drop zone was heavily bombed by Lancaster's just prior to the assault. However, they failed to destroy the numerous fortified positions. Historically, this presented disaster for the attackers... Note: Lt. Colonel Jeff Nicklen , commander of the Canadian paratroopers was killed instantly on the drop. Nicklen had been a football star with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. In his memory, the league still commerates his sacrifice with the Nicklen Memorial Trophy, for the most outstanding player.
At one point I was positive my Canadians would lose, and a few turns later was looking at a possible Allied Victory.
The game ended in a draw however, due to extreme heavy Allied losses suffered by Eriks excellent tactics and well placed MG crews.....
