This scenario is historically based athough somewhat ficticious to make it more playable. It is based on interviews with retired German's who lived in the area. During the last days of the war, the Germans were retreating out of the Elssas region along the German / French border of what is today Bitche and Wiessembourg. They basically had 2 choices as the Americans had taken Zwiebrucken and were closing on Pirmasens. Those were, either entering Germany via Fischbach b.Dahn or the next valley over by Rumbach. Most units either went in over Fischbach trying to get to Pirmasens / Kaiserslautern (not knowing Pirmasens had fallen) or Dahn to reenforce the units there with hopes the rail-head was still functional. The Americans trying to cut off the reenforcing of Pirmasens (and acting on bad/ poor intelligence that remnents of a SS Panzer division units where holding the Rumbach valley) carpet bombed (the valley 2 over from Fischbach) the Rumbach valley and the Bertwartstein castle which they thought was being used as a SS command post. The castle stood althought the civilian losses were very high in the little villages throughout the valley. As an end result several units entered via Fischbach and put up AT positions and bunkers along the roads leading to Fischbach. To make matters worse the Germans who were low on fuel had 2 plattoons of Tigers stall out in Fischbach and set up as additional coverage for the retreating units. If the old people I talked to are correct, (can't find out much more about it in the USAREUR military and historical library) the Americans came hit Pirmasens and met tough resistance of Germans who knew Germany was crumbling and they had to hold off the US as long as possible to all the the retreating units to make Heidelberg and cross the Rhien. Since the major US forces were bogged down in Primasen and Kaiserlauten, a number of US forces came up through the Elssas south of Fischbach trying to come up behind the Germans in Pirmasens and cut off supplies/retreat. What followed was a series of small but bloody battles from Fishbach to Pirmasens. The Americans took heavey casualties in Fishbach unprepared for the 2 plattons of Tigers there ( I heard they got stuck due to lack of gas) . The Allies eventually won after a few days of house to house and with the US reenfocements of additional Shermans. Basically the Germans surrendered as they where pretty much out of ammo and had no care for their wounded. The US then moved north to Pirmasens and east to Dahn encountering AT pillboxed, snipers, and the odd tank or two that had run out of fuel. Supposedly these pockets of resistance continued late into to war and the last american killed in WWII was done by a lone German who set up a machine gun next about 10k's out of Pirmasens on the way to Fischbach. (I think if history is correct this was after Germany had fallen and the guy was a fanatic who couldn't live with Germany's loss).
