However, Rommel decided that the opportunity to strike at the British 7th Armoured Division's build-up in and around the airfield at Sidi Rezegh, and drive their relieving force away from Tobruk, was too good to pass up. By mid-day elements of the 21st Panzer division were poised to clear the British off the Sidi Rezegh ridge and airfield in a two-pronged assault. The German attack came as a surprise to the battered Desert Rats who believed that another armored clash was unlikely and were in the midst of rearming. As the German infantry and artillery pounded the ridge near the Prophets Tomb, the 5th Panzer Regiment swung in from the right and struck the 22nd Armoured Brigade and the remaining tanks of the 7th Armoured at the airfield. Meanwhile, elements of the 4th Armoured Brigade were struggling to reach the battlefield and prevent a disaster.
