6 August, 1940
Odweina, British Somaliland: Italian General Nasi's invasion of British Somaliland began on August 3rd, 1940. Three Italian columns advanced on British General Godwin-Austen's grossly outnumbered force into some of the most desolate and rugged terrain on earth. The "Left" column advanced through Jirreh Pass, south and east of Djibouti and quickly gained the shore of the Red Sea against no opposition. The "Center" column, under General Nasi, advanced along the main road, running from Abyssinia to Berbera, toward Hargeisia, against light opposition as the British delayed while withdrawing on the main road to Tug Argan, between Hargeisia and Berbera, where they planned their main defense. The "Right" column advanced in the direction of Odweina. While the bulk of the British forces was fortifying the Tug Argan position, the 1/2 Punjabi Battalion was outposted to Odweina, east of Tug Argan, to slow the advance of Italian General Bertello's "Right" column. On August 6, while the main body of the "Right" column skirted west of Odweina and toward Tug Argan, a "small group of irregulars" was dispatched east, down the Bura Track, to occupy Odweina. The 1/2 Punjabi's had taken a blocking position at a place soon to be known as Sheikh Pass.
