Spearheading the Axis attack, Kampfgruppe Lueder's infantry and tanks thrust south from Pont du Fahs through Hir Moussa, cutting the Allied supply lines and wreaking havoc in the French rear areas before taking up a blocking position east of Ousseltia near Djebel Ousselat. For Brigadier General Robinett, commanding Combat Command B, 1st US Armored Division, the quiet afternoon of January 19th changed suddenly when General Fredendall contacted him at his bivouac near Sbeitla with instructions to move at once and secure the approaches to Kairouan Pass east of Ousseltia. It was the beginning of several days of clashes between CCB and Kampfgruppe Lueder, which would determine the fate of the French formations holding the mountain passes.
