Although Montgomery's operation "Bluecoat" was a moderate succes, it did wither away the Germans precious reserves. On August 1, 11th Armoured found an intact bridge just north of Beny-Bocage. Soon XXX Corps was again heading south towards Vire. Unfortunately for the Germans, a gap existed between 21th Panzer and 3rd FJ. divisions. The threat existed that XXX Corps might drive between them and attack IInd SS.Corps exposed flank, therefore it ordered the battered 9th SS "Hohenstauffen" Panzer Division to reestablish the link with 3rd FJ.division and close the gap. For this purpose Hauptmann Weiss' heavy panzer battalion was attached to this division.
