Metz, France (Best Played Human vs Human). On September 6, 1944, the US XX Corps approached the line of the Moselle River in force. After testing the approaches both north and south of Metz with elements of the 7th Armored Division and elements of supporting Armored Cavalry units, Major General Walker opted to reinforce the effort to the south. After sharp fighting during the next two days, elements of the 5th Infantry Division and 7th Armored Division established a bridgehead across the Moselle near the small village of Dornot. It was not an easy task, given the fact that the bridgehead was under direct observation and fire by the Germans on the west bank north of the bridgehead (at Fort Driant). The Americans in the bridgehead relied heavily on smoke screens to mask their activity at the river. By mid afternoon of September 8th, the Americans were prepared to attack out of their bridgehead.
