Gallabat, Sudan: The Italian invasion of the British Sudan began on the 4th of August; one column advancing from Abyssinia to Gallabat and another, 200 miles to the north, from Eritrea to Kassala. At Kassala, the Commonwealth force there withdrew and contented itself with harrassing the Italians. At Gallabat it was a different story. Against overwhelming odds, a detachment of the Sudanese Defense Force "fought with skill and gallantry" against the Italian hammer blow, before withdrawing.
