11th May 1944
The battle for Santa Maria Infante was important in the opening of the Allied offensive toward Rome on 11 May 1944. Strong Allied forces were concentrated on the west side of the Italian peninsula to renew an effort stopped by the winter and heavy German resistance. The forces in the Anzio Beachhead were ready to strike when their opportunity came as a result of progress on the other fronts. The Aurunci Mountains, fortified by positions that were part of the enemy's Gustav Line, formed a difficult barrier. The Ausonia Valley lying west of. a triangular wedge; the Minturno ridge, with the highest hill, Mt. Bracchi (205 meters), was heavily defended and it was considered too formidable for a main attack by Fifth Army. Simultaneously with the French (Algerians) attack to the north, the 88th and 85th US Div, would attack from the Town of Minturno, the well-defended hills making up the Mt. Bracchi triangle. The capture of Mt. Bracchi (a strategical observation point) and Santa Maria Infante, was essential to protect the flank of French units when they crossed the Ausonia Valley.
