The New Allies - The Matrix Games version of West Front

Monte Lungo SW of San Pietro, 75km NNW of Naples, Italy: [Best played as Allied] With the beginning of December 1943, the Allied armies in Italy were facing some of the toughest fighting yet. The weather had completely broken and the bitter cold and heavy rain added to the difficulties of operating in the mountainous country of central Italy. But with every passing day the fortifications in the Gustav Line were being strengthened and the German defenders could be allowed no respite. To reach the Liri River Valley leading to Rome, Fifth Army first had to drive the Germans out of the Camino hill area that included Monte Lungo and a little town called San Pietro Infine. In order to open Route 6 to Cassino the US 36th Infantry Division, reinforced by their "New Allies" the 1st Italian Motorized Group, began a series of assaults intended to clear formations of the German 3rd and 29th Panzergrenadier Divisions from their Camino hill defenses. On the foggy morning of December 8th, the Italians launched their first assault against their former allies dug in on the bare rocky slopes of Monte Lungo.
