8 October, 1942
In preparation of the real attack (Lightfoot and Supercharge) further south, the 9th Australian infantry division was ordered to mount a large scale probing attack on the nothern sector of the El Alamein line. During the night of October 27, two Australian infantry brigades made their way through the extensive minefields and attacked a battalion of the 125. Panzergrenadier regiment. Against this might, the grenadiers didn't stand a chance and at first light, the Australians found themselves holding hill 42 and 43, just west of Tell El Eisa. Now with the outpost and inner belt of minefields out of the way, both infantry brigades turned north to attack the remaining positions along the coastal highway. With first light, the 40th Royal Tank Regiment was also ordered forward to aid in the attack. But the German line was far from being cracked! While the tattered remains of the defeated grenadier battalion made their way to safety, the situation was still unclear to Rommel. He had expected diversionary attacks, but not in this scale and certainly not in this sector! Rommel was unwilling to release his mobile reserves so soon, so he ordered 90. Leichte Afrika Division to seal the breach with their proper means.

The Germans have plenty of troops, but they are scattered about and semi-stuck behind their own defenses. By the time I realized how strong the allied force was, it was a stretch to get troops to the fight.
