Hurtgen Forest, 20km SE of Aachen Germany: [Best played as Allied]. The US 8th Infantry Division had been fighting its way through the Hurtgen Forest since November. Its progress was agonizingly slow due to poor roads, rain, sleet, and the tenacious resistance of the German 275th and 272nd Volks Grenadier Divisions. The the men of the US 121st Infantry Regiment, who had been living and fighting in miserable conditions for weeks, were exhausted. Hundreds were suffering from frostbite and trenchfoot, yet the commander of the 8th Division ordered another attack to seize Castle Hill and the village of Bergstein. During the foggy, early morning hours of 7 December the infantrymen of the 121st saw a small group of soldiers moving up to the front of the column. Some got a look at their unit patch and soon the word was spread down the line: "The Rangers are here!"
