Amarante 18 April 1809 - Despite capturing Oporto, Soult was isolated from other French forces and, with insufficient forces of his own, needed to make contact with either Ney or Lapisse before attempting to march south against Lisbon. So he sent Loison eastwards towards the Tras-os-Montes to obtain information on Lapisse's advance from Salamanca. Loison found the Portuguese under Silveira in strength at the River Tamega and was unable to make further progress. Meanwhile, receiving news that the inadequately defended town of Chaves had been recaptured, Soult was obliged to sent Loison reinforcements to deal with the growing problem.
